Adderall Banned
in Canada Adderall Links |
A popular drug for treating patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been pulled off the market in Canada after it's been linked to several sudden deaths and strokes.
It should be noted, all the strokes and deaths linked to the drug have occurred in the U.S.
However, the drug, Adderall XR, by Shire Pharmaceuticals Group Plc has not been pulled by U.S. drug safety regulators. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration refused to ban the drug because they said there's just not enough evidence the drug is clearly responsible for the deaths.
Patients in Canada who have the drug are being asked to turn it into a pharmacy so it can be safely destroyed.
As a precautionary measure, the FDA issued an advisory, recommending Adderall products not be used in children or adults with heart problems.
The FDA said they would closely monitor adverse-event reports. About 2 million children in the U.S. have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Late last year the FDA approved Adderall to treat adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
